History of Music Bay
The first Music Bay store was opened in August 1984 in Mortimer Street, Herne Bay, by Graham Harmsworth. After over 8 years of working in and managing music shops for a county wide chain, he had decided to use his experience and knowledge to open the friendly, general type of music shop he'd gone into when he first began to play organ and keyboard as a child.
Initially, the Herne Bay shop was half the size it is now and was soon stocked out with keyboards, accessories and printed music- with the odd guitar, brass and woodwind instruments thrown in for good measure. These days a lot more guitars and ukuleles are on show & having rapidly outgrown its existing premises, extensive building work of a rear extension allowed the business to successfully develop.
Graham Harmsworth says "It's good to see customers and their families growing up with us. We have regular customers who came in from day one and still keep calling on us. Mums and dads who came in as school kids to buy their first guitar, drum kit or keyboard, who are now calling in with their own children who have also become regular customers. We've always catered for the whole family and for all generations. All our customers are important people to us and we want them to feel welcome. In fact many of our customers are now more like old friends."
